BOATERS & FISHERMEN
> Colorado has a year-round
open season for trout. The Williams
Fork Reservoir is mentioned in
popular fishing and hunting magazines quite often as a first
class lake to catch lunkers all year long. The pike, mac's,
and trout are LARGE and abundant. Ice fishing tournaments
are held here and on the other 6 lakes in the area -- all within
30 miles: Green
Mountain Reservoir, Grand Lake,
Lake Granby Reservoir, Shadow
Mountain Reservoir, Wolford Reservoir, and Willow
Creek Reservoir. Less than 10 miles
away, the Williams
Fork River is historically popular
for fly fishing. The Colorado
River and the Blue River are
"Gold Medal Waters" -- a 10 to 25 mile drive.
> The Colorado River and the Blue River
deserve their designation as Gold Medal Waters, with magnificent
trout fishing, and good footing makes wading easy. Average is
16-20 inches but plenty of bigger fish are available, too! Some
getting to 28-33 inches! Late May try caddis and stoneflies.
By June, pale morning dun's, blue wing olives, rusty spinners,
green drakes. From late June to early July the salmonflies emerge,
and in August beetles and hoppers make their way to the water.
> Want a really unique experience?
Every fall the Colorado Department of Wildlife
will round up the kokonee
salmon to "milk" eggs
and then give the fish away to anyone who shows up carrying a
current fishing license. It is quite an experience to witness
or, better yet, to participate in the round-up. They are always
looking for help. |
WILLIAMS FORK RESERVOIR
> Completed in 1959, Williams
Fork Dam & Power sends water and electricity to the Western
slope when Denver diverts water to the city from elsewhere. Standing
217 feet above the Williams Fork River steambed, the dam backs
up a reservoir of nearly 97,000 acre feet of water, and the power
plant contains a 3,158-kilovolt generator.
> Just 4 miles from our lodging, Williams
Fork Reservoir has a surface area of 1,860 acres of water and
a shoreline of 15.8 miles. Open year round, with two boat ramps,
ice fishing, and sail boarding with full suits. Snagging kokanee
salmon starts September 1, ends December 1.
> The last two
Colorado state records for northern pike were caught at Williams
Fork Reservoir! |
